African Soil Seminar

Soils are crucial for sustainable development, climate change adaptation and resilience and are vital to the achievements of the goals of the 2063 Agenda “The future for Africa we want”, the 2030 Agenda of the UN and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Inspired by African stakeholders at the Global Soil Week 2015, who expressed a strong interest in creating a regional African platform for African governments, we would like to bring to your attention and invite you to join us at the:

African Soil Seminar | 28-30 November 2016
Venue: World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), United Nations Avenue, Nairobi

Co-Hosted by:
Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries, Kenya
Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ethiopia
Ministère de l’Agriculture, de l’Elevage et de la Pêche, Benin (tbc)
Ministère de l’Agriculture et des Aménagements Hydrauliques, Burkina Faso (tbc)

Improving livelihoods of the rural poor, and the health of humans and ecosystems in Sub-Saharan will depend in large part on the restoration and rehabilitation of degraded soils. Coordination, exchange and mutual learning on experiences of the multitude of African and international initiatives and programmes on sustainable soil and land management are key to advancement of national agendas and regional synergies for improving livelihoods and soil health.

The African Soil Seminar aims at an inclusive approach to listen to and understand these complex interactions and linkages. Representatives of the governments of Kenya, Ethiopia, Benin and Burkina Faso, non-state actors and other national and international stakeholders will share lessons on investments and learnings with soil rehabilitation and agriculture-led, sustainable development programmes. For that purpose this seminar has been structured around 6 key topics:

Soil Carbon & Climate Change; Food Security & Nutrition; Land Governance; Financing Restoration; Water Management; and Urban-Rural Continuities.

Through workshops and high-level plenaries we will be exploring these topics in open, inventive, and solution-oriented exchange. We are counting on your participation and engagement!

Facilitating Partners of the seminar:
GRAF, ICRAF, FANRPAN, GIZ, TMG, and the Global Soil Forum – IASS.
