Science Funding in Germany – general information

There is a considerable number of national funding opportunities in Germany, but the wealth of information can be overwhelming. Who is eligible? What are the conditions? How to apply? All these questions are crucial to filing a successful application.

The German Federal Funding Advisory Service on Research and Innovation is the central point of contact for any questions concerning research and innovation funding. The centre informs potential applicants about the federal research structure, funding programmes and contact persons as well as about current funding priorities and initiatives.

The web portal 'Research in Germany' is the central information platform of the initiative to 'Promote Innovation and Research in Germany' by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Editorial responsibility for the Portal lies with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Research in Germany aims to give you an overview of the German research landscape and funding system, and provide you with interesting news from the scientific world. Additionally, practical information supports foreign scientists and researchers in their decision to collaborate with German research organisations or to complete a research stay in Germany.

Another valuable source of information is the web portal 'Kooperation international', which is also commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and jointly run by the DLR Project Management Agency and VDI Technologiezentrum GmbH.

Kooperation international is

  • a communication platform for those who seek information and cooperation partners in Germany and beyond;
  • a tool to promote cross-border networking of research institutions;
  • an instrument that links German government agencies and science, intermediary and industrial organisations; and
  • a place, where those active in international STI co-operation can present themselves and their activities.
